Fixing the *entire* Terminator Franchise

2019.11.03 23:45 Mcheetah2 Fixing the *entire* Terminator Franchise

First of all, let me say, Terminator should've never been a franchise. The story is NOT GOOD. The first two movies are just high action popcorn flicks made in the 80s and early 90s where compelling realistic storylines weren't necessary for successful action movies. (I mean, look at Face/Off.)
With that said, because the story is so basic and simplistic...

The ONLY way you can push a successful franchise out of Terminator is to keep reusing the same plot over and over again: Terminator travels back in time to kill someone important and a human travels back to protect them.

They COULD'VE done this and had a series of successful Terminator movies that are basically the same thing if they made a clear point to change who the "important" person is every time a new movie comes out (i.e, not John Connor or "leader of the Resistance" in each one) and made it different people who will be key to stopping Skynet in the future, with each movie being another important figure in the Resistance. John Connor may be the most important one the engine that lets the Resistance win, but it doesn't mean he has to be the ONLY important figure. Also, the Resistance is a global group of surviving humans, so why just limit it to the US or just John Connor?
So basically, you'd be doing the same story over and over again, but with different central figures to protect, different locations and countries, different kinds of action sequences, different models of Terminators and different protectors sent back in time. Another thing I'll add: both the Terminators and heroes would all be sent back at the same time from the future. As in, Skynet sent back, let's say eight Terminators, to different points in time at once. The Resistance then finds out when they were sent back and goes to stop them once finding out. This leads me to my next point:

Have two franchises of movies: The "main" Terminator movies set in the present day and the future Prequel Trilogy.

I don't think Terminator Salvation was all that bad. Even still, you could have a future timeline "prequel" trilogy of all the Resistance trying to first survive against the Terminators (Salvation), then a second movie trying to stop the T-800 from going back through time. They fail, and Kyle Reese goes back. Then at the end, learns the T-800 wasn't the only one sent back; several were through time, setting up the third movie. In the third future prequel, they have to infiltrate and track down the data to find out where each of the Terminators went through time and it's essentially a Suicide Mission. John Connor may or may not be the lead. Most of the Resistance dies, but the surviving ones get the info and travel back I time to stop all the other Terminators who went back, explaining each of the present-day movies in this fictional Terminator franchise.
So the Salvation trilogy would be released in-between the main franchise, each movie coming out every two years or so. In the main trilogy, it's a different key member of the Resistance. One could be Moon Bloodgood's character from Salvation who will be hunted down, another could be Sam Worthington's character... Hell, they could've even done a movie where the guy the T-800 is based off of gets hunted down in present day by a female Terminator and had a female time traveler (maybe his daughter or someone) come back and save him. That way, they could even push the "Girl Power" BS without coming off woke and anti-male, if they wanted to do that. That could've been the latest movie, so here's another pitch.

Fixing Terminator Dark Fate:

The Terminator sent back is essentially Dani Ramos (looks like her and is an infiltrator model with an actual personality and can talk with emotion, just like a human) and she's here to seemingly kill Arnold's human character the T-800 is based off of in his old age, but Grace comes back to save him. At one point, they realize the female Terminator isn't trying to kill him, but his granddaughter, the young version of Grace. In the end, Arnold's character, a tough army vet, succeeds in weakening Terminator Dani with liquid nitrogen or intense heat, and Grace finishes her off. Future Grace then trains her younger self but without revealing who she really is, and it's revealed at the end that Grace has already served her role in The Resistance and that this is her final mission before she dies. In the future, she misremembered someone saving her life as a child, only to realize before she travels back that she was her childhood hero and role model all along.
But yeah, Hollywood isn't creative enough to just make these movies like horror movies are made and just keep it simple and give people good action scenes and make the already-tepid story secondary. Hell, you know a perfect franchise that already accomplishes this? The Fast and the Furious. It's a perfect example of a successful action franchise that's just high action and little plot and story.

TL;DR Version:

Make the main series Terminator movies focus on action and great cinematography and the main plot secondary and the same: trying to save someone in the past from a Time Traveling Terminator. Also have a prequel "Salvation" trilogy set in the future that sets up the main franchise and explains why the plot is more-or-less the same every time: it's all part of one story to stop all the Terminators who traveled back on the same day in the future and save all the key members of The Resistance, not just John Connor.

Franchise Movie Releases

(either following T2: Judgement Day or Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines)
2010: "Terminator: Salvation," the start of a new prequel trilogy in the future during the war. This one would not like the real Terminator Salvation we got and would hold back more information. Highlights how Judgment Day happened and how John Connor, played by Christian Bale, rises up to protect humanity during Skynet's uprising. Connor and his wife save various people, including soon-to-be key members of The Resistance, while planning to take out a vital factory key in creating new Terminators. The Resistance succeeds and the factory is destroyed, but John now sets his sights on the Skynet motherbase.
2012: "Terminator: Skynet." (4) The target: Katherine Brewster, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, is a future computer genius for The Resistance, and the key intelligence in weakening Skynet. The protector: a hero from The Resistance, played by Michael B Jordan or someone similar to him that looks different from John Connor or Kyle Reese. The Terminator: Brewster is being hunted down by a Terminator that looks just like her, called the T-Y, also played by Bryce Dallas Howard.
2014: "Terminator: Redemption," part two in the Salvation trilogy. John Connor, Kyle Reese, and The Resistance, through one of their spies, learn of the Skynet time machine and has to try to stop them from sending back a Terminator through time to kill John Connor's mother, Sarah Connor. They'll have to go on their toughest mission yet in trying to storm a Skynet base by surprise before the Terminator goes back in time after Sarah Connor. They don't succeed in time, but Kyle agrees to go back, sacrificing himself to ensure the future is saved. It's then discovered that this isn't the only Terminator sent back into the past; several were.
2016: "Terminator: Destiny." (5) The target: Miles Dyson, from Cyberdyne, who needs to be killed before he attempts to undo Skynet's creation. The protector: Blair Williams, lieutenant of The Resistance, played by Moon Bloodgood. The Terminator: The T-2000, played by either Dwayne Johnson or Terry Crews; just a big bad tough dude. The T-2000 is the most advanced Terminator yet and can heal itself from any injury, essentially being immortal. The only way to stop it is to lure it onboard a shuttle and launch it into space, where it'll have no way to return. This also means Blair will likely have to sacrifice her own life and pilot the shuttle towards the sun in order to permanently stop the T-2000.
2018: "Terminator: Freedom," the third in the Salvation trilogy. All of The Resistance has to infiltrate the motherbase of Skynet in a suicide mission to attempt to find the data of where all the Terminators were sent to, to have any survivors go back to the past and save the future from the Terminators sent back through time.
2020: "Terminator: Dark Fate." (6) The target: Sargeant William Candy (we'll retcon away his goofy Southern accent) played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. He'll have insight in how to stop or slow down Skynet in the present day, being the man the T-800 was modeled after. It also returns Arnold to the franchise after a long enough break. The protector: a cybernetically enhanced human, played by MacKenzie Davis. This hero can actually go up against a Terminator herself. The Terminator: The T-Z, played by Natalia Reyes. It's a fast and agile infiltrator model that has a liquid armor plating, can make weaker clones of itself, can perfectly mimic a human personality and speak with charisma, and is the smartest Terminator to date, even if not the toughest. We'll think it's Sargeant Candy she's after, but the real target is a young Grace, who in the future, is one of John Connor's closest allies and a Resistance field spy who gets captured and experimented on, with Skynet planning to have her infiltrate and kill The Resistance as a double agent before Connor saves her from capture.
